Contractor License
Always be sure that if hiring a Contractor that he or she is licensed appropriately for your projects scope of work. The Board for Contractors licenses businesses engaged in the construction, removal, repair, or improvement of facilities on property owned by others. Contractor licenses consist of two parts: the class of license (A, B, or C), which determines the monetary value of contracts/projects that may be performed, and the classification/specialty, which determines what type of work is allowed. “Class A Contractors” perform or manage construction, removal, repair, or improvements when (i) the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $120,00 or more, or (ii) the total value of all such construction, removal, repair, or improvements undertaken by such person within any 12-month period is $750,000 or more.
“Class B Contractors” perform or manage construction, removal, repair, or improvements when (i) the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $10,000 or more, or (ii) the total value of all such construction, removal, repair, or improvements undertaken by such person within any 12-month period is $150,000 or more.
“Class C Contractors” perform or manage construction, removal, repair, or improvements when (i) the total value referred to in a single contract or project is $1,000 or more, or (ii) the total value of all such construction, removal, repair, or improvements undertaken by such person within any 12-month period is $10,000 or more.
All contractors performing or manage construction, removal, repair, or improvements in Shenandoah County (except VA Class A) require a Shenandoah County Contractor’s License. Any Contractor who performs or manages construction, removal, repair, or improvements and DOES NOT obtain a State Class License, the total value referred to in a single contract or project cannot exceed $1,000.
