Provides its members with benefits at retirement, or upon disability or death.
VRS (Group Life Insurance)
In the event of death, employee’s beneficiary receives a payment double the amount of the employee’s salary; accidental death coverage is four times the employee’s salary. Both are rounded to next highest thousand.
Aetna Insurance
The County offers Aetna Health, Dental, Vision and EAP. Employee coverage is paid 100% by the County for the basic plan; family members may be enrolled at an additional cost.
Section 457 Deferred Compensation
Members build additional retirement funds from their pre-taxed income by selecting saving plans to suit their needs.
Tuition Assistance
Provided for approved courses which are job-related. Based on a ratio of one calendar month for each $100 of assistance provided.
Christmas/Savings Accounts
Employees may join through Bank of America or First Bank. Payments are made through payroll deduction.
DuPont Community Credit Union
Employees are eligible for membership. Payroll deduction is also available for deposits or payments.
Sunshine Club
An Employee Club, by Employees for Employees with the Mission to strengthen and maintain contact and communications between County Departments and Employees by organizing events and functions. These events and functions include, but not limited to, the following – Picnic in the Pines Luncheon in the summertime of each year and the Holiday Luncheon in December of each year.
Annual Leave
An employee begins to earn annual leave upon appointment. The rate at which it is accrued over time depends on the employee’s total length of service with Shenandoah County as presented below. Accrued annual leave is limited to a maximum amount that may be carried over from one year to the next. This carry over amount is calculated at the end of each calendar year (December 31).

Sick Leave
Sick leave is a privilege, not a right; it is accrued at a rate of 6-2/3 hours per month (two weeks per year). The maximum number of hours of sick leave an employee may accumulate is 90 days (or 720 hours).
