Planning & Zoning Code Specialist

Shenandoah County is inviting applications for the position of Planning & Zoning Code Specialist within the County’s Department of Community Development.

Shenandoah County is seeking an energetic, hard-working individual to join the County’s Department of Community Development as the Planning & Zoning Code Specialist. The Planning & Zoning Code Specialist performs difficult technical and intermediate administrative work in administering and enforcing the County Zoning and Subdivision ordinance in addition to supporting general planning activities. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Director of Community Development and general supervision of the Zoning and Subdivision Administrator.

Thorough knowledge of County’s Zoning and Subdivision regulations and related laws and ordinances thorough knowledge of computer programs and applications, including the Microsoft Office suite; general knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS) and related applications; ability to read and interpret plats and plans related to land development; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, engineers, other governmental agencies, and the general public; ability to enforce ordinances and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a highly interactive team-oriented work environment.

Graduation from high school or equivalent diploma is required. An Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in related field is preferred but can be supplemented with experience. Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Possession of the Certified Zoning Official (CZO) certification from the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials (VAZO) or the ability to obtain within 24 months from date of hire.

The annual pay range for this FLSA non-exempt position is $37,140 – $55,135, commensurate with education, certifications, experience, and internal equity. The successful candidate must pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screening and background check.
